Dear DA: How to Begin Working with Industries?

I would like to engage with pharma/medical device companies but I’m not sure how. What’s the best way to get involved with them?

There are several ways to get involved with industry partners.  All of it depends on your interests but also on how much time you have/want to dedicate to these activities. Conducting an investigator initiated study is much more time consuming than participating in an advisory board.

There is a range of activities that you can get involved with depending on the company.  These include dinner programs, advisory boards, peer-to-peer training, general consulting agreements.  If your practice is set up (with dedicated research personnel) to conduct clinical studies, you can also take part in their clinical program or even propose an investigator initiated study.

The easiest way to get started is to learn more about companies (and products) you are interested in working with.  Have a conversation with your sales representative and/or Medical Science Liaison(MSL).  Take the time and develop a relationship with them.  Tell them you would like to get more involved and ask about upcoming opportunities.

Do they have a speaker bureau?
Can you be invited to one of their events?
If you have a specific expertise/interest that fits their product pipeline, ask about consulting or being part of their official scientific advisory board.

Your expertise as a practicing clinician, researcher, and innovator is highly valued.  Do keep in mind that it may take some time before you can officially get involved.  Be patient and continue to share your interest and enthusiasm in working with them.  Dermatology is a special discipline that is very industry friendly and we view working with you as a true long-term partnership.
